Description:

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A crouching lion cast as the head of a long hairpin or brooch with a decorative motif incised into the upper part of the pin, just behind the lion's folded back legs. The lion's body is replete with details, including a tail lying along his back and an impressive mane. Achaemenid royalty used lions as their symbol, as evidenced by the enormous bronze lion-weight and the lion frieze in enameled brick found in the palace at Persepolis. Imagine who might have adorned themselves with this striking item! Size: 0.45" W x 5.25" H (1.1 cm x 13.3 cm); 2.25" H (5.7 cm) on included custom stand.
