Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Machalilla, ca. 1000 to 500 BCE. An extraordinarily rare pair of Machalilla pottery effigy figures, the taller representing a male, the shorter representing a female, both fashioned in an abstract style, with attenuated arms and legs extended out from their torsos, the female with round protruding breasts and genitalia delineated as well as an incised necklace and minimalistic facial features, the male with elaborate incised geometric motifs adorning his torso, back, and face - most likely depicting tattoos or body paint. Both come with custom stands. Size: male measures 3.875" H (9.8 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex-private New York collection; Ex-private California collection, acquired about 25 years ago.
