Description:

Southern Italy, Daunian Culture, ca. 5th century BCE. A very finely sculpted terracotta askos, slipped in white with added black and red geometric design. The vessel is made to mimic a duck, with pointed tail, wide body, and upturned head. On front of spout is a stylized duck face, with eyes and beak present. The sides present a mirrored pattern of a strong red line and a near "A" shaped figure, which can be interpreted as a stylized wing and foot.

The painted pottery of the Daunian culture can often be written off as simply linear with no real direction or symbolic meaning, but sometimes, as with this piece, there are clear references to the Geometric past, evident abstractions to tangible things, and that makes collecting their art worthwhile. 7"L x 6-1/2"H x 6-1/2"W. Intact and excellent condition.
