Description:

Mali, ca. 19th-20th Century. A fine Dogon statue of a horseman and female rider, beautifully detailed. The piece is cast in bronze, using the lost wax method. Horses were rare for the Dogon, and therefore symbolized status, wealth, and power. Artwork incorporating horses and riders were meant to depict powerful men, or mythological figures associated with the Dogon creation story. This example is interesting because of the addition of a second rider, obviously female, possibly meant to depict a newly married couple of high status. The horse is sturdy and strong in appearance and is decorated with a handsome bridle and related accoutrements, elaborately worked with geometric designs. The figures are nicely detailed, the male holding fast to the horse, the female with both hands on the shoulders of the male. A charming example! 7 ¾" x 8"

Provenance: ex-Pearson collection, Denver.
