Description:

Eastern Europe, Ukraine Baltic Vikings / Kievan Rus culture, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. A great collection of bronze and brass pieces used as buckles and fittings for horse riding tack, which include rounded and scalloped discs and pronged buckles. The buckles have square or circular frames and many still contain their prong and/or plates to rivet to leather straps. The discs are ornamental pieces that are pierced for suspension along the straps to decorate the horse tack and many are scalloped or have decorative star shaped openwork - the case with the red backing demonstrates how they may have been strung using a modern cord. The Vikings treasured their horses and would have outfitted them well, using these bronze attachments to demonstrate wealth. The pieces are displayed and protected on a felt backing in large wood and glass frames, which are approximately the same size. Size (largest disc segment): 2" Diameter (5.1 cm); (smallest disc): 0.5" Diameter (1.3 cm); (frame): 15.125" L x 12.125" W (38.4 cm x 30.8 cm)
