Northern Europe, Viking/Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A fine cast-bronze penannular brooch in a classic Viking style. The body is a bronze open ring, cast to appear as twisted strands, wider in the center, and tapering in size to two large terminals resembling serpent heads. A delicate pin is wrapped around the ring, able to move freely, that is designed to hook between the two terminals for closure. This item would have been worn to secure large, warm clothing, probably made from wool. Size (body): 1.6" W x 1.4" H (4.1 cm x 3.6 cm); (with pin): 2.1" H (5.3 cm)

Provenance: Private Lindenhurst, Illinois, USA collection, acquired from Artemission, London, England on February 3, 2014; ex-property of an English gentleman, acquired in the 1980s
