Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A wonderful stone carving of the Brahmanical Triad or Trimurtri, the sacred trinity representing the supreme deity of Hinduism - in which Brahma the creator, Vishnu the preserver, and Shiva the destroyer/transformer are personified as a holy triad. At the front and center is perhaps Brahma, shown as a sage with a beard in an elaborate headdress, large ear ornaments, and an elegantly designed pectoral that cascades over his nude chest. His facial features and bodily contours are intricately carved. Flanking his side are the other lordly heads, their coiffures fusing into Brahma' headdress to become a unified being, framed by a lotus or rosette halo. The 3 heads manifest creation, protection, and destruction- a powerful and harmonious piece! Size: 7.5" L x 6" W x 10.5" H (19 cm x 15.2 cm x 26.7 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.

In this piece all three deities of the Trimurti manifest as a single avatar that is known as Dattatreya - Datta meaning "given" and Atreya in reference to the sage Atri, his physical father. This imagery reflects the impressive artistic canons of India, particularly visual imagery depicted in sacred temples, as starting in the 8th century CE, Hindus dedicated temples to the Trimurti - the most famous including the Baroli Trimurti Temple, the Elephanta Caves, the Mithrananthapuram Trimurti Temple, the Prambanan Trimurti Temple, Savadi Trimurti Temple, and Thripaya Trimurti Temple.
