South Asia, India, Pala Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A wonderful leaded brass figurine of the mother goddess Ambika (or Ambika Devi), an epithet or form of Mahadevi, the supreme deity of Hinduism. Here she is seated on a double-lotus set upon a tall pedestal with both of her sons - one at her breast and the other at her side. Ambika is associated with the mango tree and its fruit and is always portrayed with one or both of her sons, as seen here. She is worshiped on behalf of mothers and infants. Size: 1.6" L x 2.2" W x 3.4" H (4.1 cm x 5.6 cm x 8.6 cm)
