Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), Pyu region, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A sandstone fragment of a serene Buddha carving with arched brows and downcast eyes over slightly smiling lips. The figure is framed by a serpentine or leaf-shaped mandorla, and the full stele likely depicted Buddha in a seated, meditative pose. The Pyu city states in modern day Myanmar, were connected by sea trade routes and heavily influenced by Indian culture- by the 4th century Buddhism had largely replaced Hinduism as the primary religion. The mandorla (prabhamandala) symbolizes a cobra hood or giant Naga, from the serpent king Muchilinda, rising behind Buddha protectively. Size: 6.5" W x 8.7" H (16.5 cm x 22.1 cm)
