Description:

Ancient Near East, Byzantium, ca. 9th to 10th century. A sheet bronze repousse plaque depicting Saint Simeon, standing in full length robes with intricately detailed trimmings, and gazing ahead with fine features, curly hair, and a neatly manicured beard. The figure is outlined with a punched dot border, and the saint's name is inscribed to the left in a vertical column with two double scrolled heart-shaped motifs below. The edges of the plaque are pierced for attachment. Size: 5.4" W x 8.6" H (13.7 cm x 21.8 cm)

Saint Simeon came to the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem. Simeon was a devout man who understood he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. He held the infant Christ in his arms and said, "Lord, no lettest thou thy servant depart in peace …" (Nune dimittis, Domine.) He also prophesied that Mary would be pierced to the heart.
