Ancient Near East, The Levant, Hittite culture, ca. first half of the 2nd millennium BCE; northwestern Iran and northeastern Turkey, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE; Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A lovely ensemble of 9 cast miniature artifacts from 3 distinct ancient cultures. First are 3 petite Hittite bull figurines standing upon nubbin legs, 2 cast from leaded bronze, and 1 cast from copper. Next are 4 leaded copper pieces from Luristan: a standing figure with bulging eyes; a figure riding atop a bull with outstretched arms; a standing zebu bull with a prominent back hump; and a squat pouring vessel with a lengthy handle or bail. Last are 2 Roman artifacts: a vessel lid with a tapered, baluster-shaped handle, and a lengthy serpent with an expressive face and a tapered tenon on the back end for attachment. Size of largest (Roman serpent): 4.08" L x 0.47" W (10.4 cm x 1.2 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006

  • Condition: Repairs to left horn of 1 Hittite leaded bronze bull; suspension loop of standing Luristan figure; lowest handle portion of Luristan vessel; and both right legs and right horn of Luristan zebu bull. Chips and losses to legs, face, and horns of Luristan bull with rider. Remaining 2 Hittite bulls as well as both Roman pieces are intact and very good. Great patina across all pieces.
