Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A visually appealing set of 9 textile fragments woven from either natural cotton or camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of brown, green, blue, red, peach, cream, yellow, and black. Three fragments are loosely woven, gauze-like panels with either brown threads, blue and white threads with sparse red threads, or red threads with an abstract face near the bottom. The remaining 6 fragments each bear abstract motifs of either avian creatures, petite maskettes, geometric motifs, or minimalist linear motifs. Size of largest (brown gauze): 7.75" L x 5.1" W (19.7 cm x 13 cm); (frame): 15.6" W x 12.5" H (39.6 cm x 31.8 cm)

  • Condition: Textile fragments have not been examined outside of display frame. All textiles are fragments of larger compositions. All pieces have minor loosening and fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, with small areas of loss to some, and light staining or fading to thread colors. Nice preservation to decorative motifs.
