Description:

Russia, Perm region, Viking Rus, Perm Animal Style (Permian Animal Style), ca. 8th to 9th century CE. A cast bronze bird, shown seated with its head raised, a dramatic comb down the back of its neck, and a hollow, ovoid body from which hang two dangling chains. Those chains end in round, open, bell-like terminals. Birds seem to have been very significant in this culture, with their heads often serving as protective features and their bodice formed into rustling, jangling artifacts like this one. We believe that items like this one were hung from hunting belts and later buried with their owners. Size: 1.4" W x 2.25" H (3.6 cm x 5.7 cm); 2.45" H (6.2 cm) on included custom stand.
