Description:

Pre-Columbian, Panama, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A miniature 12K gold shaman pendant from the ancients of Panama. Ancient societies of Central America used gold adornment to symbolize power and honor in both life and death. Gold was so highly regarded that leaders were buried surrounded by goldworks. The shaman stands with outspread legs and extended arms, nude save a belt around his waist. His dramatic visage, featuring coffee bean shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a wide full-lipped mouth, is crowned by a spiral-curled headdress. The integral loop behind the shaman's neck makes this piece not only special in so many respects (aesthetic and symbolic), but also wearable! Weight: 7.6 grams. Size: 1" W x 1.125" H (2.5 cm x 2.9 cm). Gold quality: 50% gold, equivalent to 12K.

Provenance: ex Craig Hendrix collection, South Carolina, USA; ex Charles Craig Jr. collection, Costa Rica, acquired in the 1960s and 1970s
