Description:

South Asia, India, Pala Empire, ca. 8th to 12th centuries CE. A beautiful schist stone relief panel of three Hindu deities standing on ornate lotus pedestals upon an integral shelf. The main central goddess is perhaps Lalita Maha, an iteration of Parvati, the goddess of fertility, love, and beauty. Lalita has four arms: the lower left hand rests on the head of her son the god of war Kartikeya, the lower right hand forms an apana mudra gesture, and the upper left hand holds a mirror. The right attendant is the elephant headed Ganesh, a consort of Lalita and in some stories, her other son. Below their feet are a worshiper and a dog-like creature, and above their heads are two small celestial beings and a face at the uppermost point of the stele. The Pala empire was a time of great stability for the Indian subcontinent, and the arts flourished during this period with wealthy patrons from the ruling class. This panel is intricately carved with incredible details. The sculptor's delineation of jewelry and ornate elements reflect prosperity as well as the elaborate Pala style. Size: 6" W x 13.25" H (15.2 cm x 33.7 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
