Description:

Ancient Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A beautiful brass cross with arms that flair to wider termini. The surface of the cross is decorated with four circular motifs in negative relief, one at the center and one adorning each arm. The circle, a deceptively simple shape, has possessed a variety of powerful meanings throughout time all over the world; however, some of these are universal. Circles represent unity, completeness, and infinity - that which is without a beginning or an end, without limiting sides or sharp corners. A beautiful piece of religious jewelry from the Byzantine Empire. Size (pendant): 2" W x 3.375" H (5.1 cm x 8.6 cm); (necklace cord): 22" L (55.9 cm)
