Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A fine cast-bronze bread stamp with a circular body and a thick rectangular handle on the verso. The recessed stamp face features eight raised letters as well as a small crucifix which would have marked a particular loaf of bread for its intended owner. Fine layers of green and brown patina have formed across the composition, however scattered abrasions have revealed the original golden-brown bronze color beneath. Size: 3.3" Diameter x 0.9" H (8.4 cm x 2.3 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Janet & George Zakos collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1980s
