Pre-Columbian, Northern Colombia, probably Sinu peoples, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A finely cast 83.15% gold (equivalent to 18K+) shaman pendant from the ancients of Panama. Ancient societies of Central America used gold adornment to symbolize power and honor in both life and death. Gold was so highly regarded that leaders were buried surrounded by goldworks. The shaman stands with outspread legs and extended arms, holding an implement in his right hand, nude save a belt around his waist, bracelets, leglets, anklets, and a magnificently intricate headdress with both twisted and smooth bands over his eyes and mouth and feathered plumes rising above. A fabulous piece of wearable art! Gold quality: 83.15% gold, equivalent to 18-20 karats, just under 20K. Weight: 20 grams. Size: 1.3" W x 2.125" H (3.3 cm x 5.4 cm) + 20" L (50.8 cm) cord
