Near East/Middle East, Iraq, Abbasid Dynasty, ca. 8th century CE. A gold dinar, featuring elegant Kufic script on both sides. The earliest Abbasid dinars, struck ca. 750, came from Damascus or Kufa; after 762 they were struck in Baghdad, which was built in that year by Caliph al-Mansur to create a new capital. In 786, Caliph Harun al-Rashid came to power and began to mint dinars featuring the names of the governors of Egypt both in Baghdad and Fustat (seat of the governor of Egypt). Size: 0.75" W (1.9 cm); total weight 1.6 grams
