Europe, Paris, France, ca. mid 19th century CE. Eight original steel engravings with hand coloring from Gabriel Lafond de Lurcy's (1802-1876) "Voyages Autour du Monde et Naufrages Celebres," published in Paris: Administration de Librairie, 1844-1854, a piece of romantic travel literature that took the reader on a sojourn throughout South America. Each work provides the outsider's conception of South American natives, their customs and environs. The first piece is an original steel engraving, engraved by Lechard after Collignon (Edmond Collignon, French, 1822-1890), with original hand-coloring entitled “Perou - Le Chocolate Danse Indigene a Lima” (Peru - The Indigenous Chocolate Dance in Lima). Next, is an original steel engraving, engraved by Lechard after Elmeric (Charles-Edouard Elmerich, French, 1813-1889), with original hand coloring entitled, "Chili. Ancien Pont Suspendu sur le Quillota" (Chili. Ancient Suspension Bridge South of Quillota). Third in this group is another original steel engraving, engraved by Lechard after Elmeric (Charles-Edouard Elmerich, French, 1813-1889), with original hand coloring entitled, "Lima. Vue et Costumes des Habitants." (Lima. View and Costumes of Villagers.) The fourth piece is an original steel engraving by Doherty after Collignon (Edmond Collignon, French, 1822-1890) with original hand coloring entitled, "Guayaquil. Baigneuses - Eglise de St. Domingo" [Guayaquil (in Ecuador). Bathers - Church of St. Domingo]. The fifth work in this group is another original steel engraving with hand coloring entitled, "Guatemala, Indiens du Guatemala" (Guatemala: Indians of Guatemala) painted by A. Guynemen. The sixth piece is an original steel engraving with hand coloring entitled, "Perou. Arierros. Danse d'Indiens Aymaras" (Peru. Muleteers. (Dance of the Aymara Indians). Finally, the seventh and eighth examples, both oriented portrait style rather than landscape like the others, including an original steel engraving with hand coloring entitled, "Chili. Guaso et Negres Libres" (Chile. Gaucho and Free Blacks.) and another original steel engraving with hand coloring entitled, "Mexique. Fernand Cortex et la Princesse Marina" (Mexico. Ferdinand Cortez and Princess Marina).
