Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A beautiful high quality 93% silver devotional plaque of the Buddha or an ascetic seated in full lotus, with his hands resting in his lap, palms up. The silver sheet was hammered and repousse decorated, the head and face reinforced by dried clay or earth molded into the verso. Precious metal panels featuring religious icons like this were given as offerings in temples / monasteries or placed in burial chambers and reliquaries. Size: 4.5" L x 2.25" W (11.4 cm x 5.7 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand; silver quality: 93.25%; weight: 8.2 grams

  • Condition: Indentations, bending, and creasing to the thin panel. Tiny perforation to the knee. Green patina and dark toning. Remains of earth / clay pushed into repousse head to hold the shape. Nice condition with great preservation to detials.
