Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 7th to 10th century CE. A beautiful buckle of an elongated form that is cast from bronze via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique and enrobed in a thin layer of 65% gold (equivalent to 15K+). The buckle body has a slight indentation on either lateral edge, shallow grooves atop a rounded periphery, and a stylized phytomorphic plant with curling tendrils and chevron-shaped leaves along the lower body. Both the ovoid loop and lightly arched pin still articulate on a mutual hinge. Size: 3.3" L x 1.3" W (8.4 cm x 3.3 cm); quality of gilding: 65% (equivalent to 15K+).
