Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Zuni Pueblo, ca. mid-20th to 21st century CE. A collection of Zuni carved fetish animal figurines made from various semi-precious stones, along with a beaded leather fetish and a real bear claw. Four figurines are turquoise, one is malachite, and two are lapis lazuli. In Zuni cosmology and those of neighboring tribes, each fetish is believed to possess inherent powers or qualities that may aid its owner. The bear claw, attached to a toe pad with some fur remaining, further exemplifies the strength and power these animals command and underscores the bear's revered status as a guardian of the western direction in traditional belief systems. Size of large lapis bear: 2" L x 0.5" W x 0.75" H (5.1 cm x 1.3 cm x 1.9 cm)
