Description:

Ancient Near East, Persia (Iran), Sassanian (Sassanid) Empire, ca. 500 CE. A beautiful, symmetrical cast bronze vase. The vase flows from a wide, un-rimmed neck to a tear-drop shaped body with a scalloped exterior, then down to a narrow ankle and round, flat foot. The sides of the body are lightly impressed with dense, curvilinear motifs that give the appearance of ferns. The vase looks delicate, because the bronze of its neck is very narrow, but it stands well on its own and has retained its shape since antiquity. The bronze material suggests it was a piece of value, owned by someone who wished to display their wealth. This desire carried over even into the grave, as this piece would have been placed into a grave to mark its owner's social standing in life and provision them in death. Size: 2.65" W x 7.25" H (6.7 cm x 18.4 cm)
