Description:

Western Europe, France/ Gaul, Frankish, Merovingian Dynasty, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A dazzling example of Frankish luxury arts! An ensemble of 3 gold artifacts with garnet inlays: a buckle and 2 studs. The buckle presents an annular chape with a gold bezel and a circular garnet cabochon that attaches to an arched frame of 3 garnet inlays and a rectangular prong of 2 inlays. The 2 studs are likely from a scabbard and present discoid forms, each with an annular garnet inlay set in a thin gold bezel with a gold tang and backing. Just imagine these sparkling ornaments once embellishing the attire and possessions of Frankish nobility - certainly a lot fit for a king or queen! Size of largest (buckle): 1" L x 0.5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm); gold quality: 93% (equivalent to over 22 karats); total weight: 4.5 grams
