Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. A fascinating pottery pitcher featuring a unique, collapsed form, indicating that the neck and shoulder of the vessel must have folded into itself during the firing process. Enveloped in rich earthen deposits and liberal remains of black glaze, the ancient pitcher presents curved walls that span outwards, a tiered shoulder that collapses at the top, a slender neck, a flared rim, and a pinched spout, all sitting upon an applied, ring-shaped foot. A ribbon-form handle connects the top of the neck to the shoulder. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 4.4" H (8.9 cm x 11.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
