Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 12th century CE. A beautiful piece of wearable art from the Byzantine period comprised of an 82% pure gold chain (equivalent to 18K+) with large, disc-shaped openwork clasps, and a beautiful globe-shaped pendant, also openwork and gold. This pendant looks like a five pointed star when viewed from below, and its surface is studded with six hemispherical garnets. The rest of the pendant features delicate loops of rope-like gold filigree, five on top and five on bottom, and a large loop at the top. Size: 20" L (50.8 cm); size of pendant: 1" W (2.5 cm); gold is 82%, equivalent to 18K+; total weight: 23.5 grams

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Frances Artuner collection, Belgium, collected in the 1960s
