Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A dazzling gold foil applique boasting repousse decoration of an abstract rosette motif comprised of a central circle surrounded by 5 bifurcated petals atop a stippled field. All is encompassed by a border of dot and tongue motifs. Based on the natural shape of a botanical rosette, rosette motifs have a long history in the iconography in the Near East, stretching as far back as Mesopotamia where it served as an important symbol of Ishtar. A beautiful piece like this may have been part of an elaborate piece of jewelry or sewn onto a garment. Size: 1.5" Diameter (3.8 cm); gold quality: 85.06% (equivalent to over 20 karats); weight: 3.1 grams
