Description:

Near East, Byzantine or Langobardic, Migration Period, ca. 6th to 10th century CE. An exceptional electrum pendant with delicate filigree decorations and a repousse verso. The electrum sheets are a 39% gold (equivalent to 9K+) and 47% silver alloy, hammered into flat panels with swirling curvilinear motifs repeated in filigree and repousse, a pair of now empty circular bezels must have once contained precious stones or glass inlays. This petite piece may have been a pendant with dangling ornaments to the sides, or this could have been a clasp for a bracelet - the thicker loops to secure a pin finding. Size: 1.25" L x 0.75" W (3.2 cm x 1.9 cm); electrum quality: 39% (equivalent to 9K+) gold; 47% silver; weight: 4.8 grams
