Description:

Europe, later Lower Paleolithic, Pointe aux Oies, Wimereux, France, ca. 850,000 to 600,000 years ago. A handsome grey, creamy white, and red-brown flint chopper, knapped on one side to create a cutting surface, with a nice, unknapped handle that sits comfortably in the modern hand despite its great age. Choppers are some of the earliest tools known to humans and their ancestors, found from around 2.5 million years ago. They were created using a hammerstone to chip away flakes and create a cutting edge. The natural colors of the flint on this example are particularly beautiful. Size: 4.35" W x 4.5" H (11 cm x 11.4 cm); 6.1" H (15.5 cm) on included custom stand.
