Description:

Native American, Southern United States, Tennessee, Humphrey County, Waverly, Eastern Woodland / Mississippian, ca. 1100 BCE to 1500 CE. This is a fine collection of 6 hand-knapped stone tools that were all discovered in Waverly, Tennessee, a famous region for the Duck River Cache and the Link Farm State Archeological Area. These 6 tools are similar in shape, bifacial and slightly convex, flaked with large random patterning and rounded tips. These could have functioned as hand tools - scrapers, choppers, and blades, but also may have been hafted to poles for leverage, and the white chert tool has a flattened and rough butt end, as if used like a hammer. Chert was the stone of choice for many tools and a readily available material in Waverly, enabling the Mississippian people that settled the area to develop a high level of stone craftsmanship. Size of largest: 5.25" L x 2.25" W (13.3 cm x 5.7 cm)

Humphrey County, Tennessee is a rich area of Native American history and was the site of the Duck River Temple Mounds, part of a once prosperous Mississippian town with skilled chert stoneworkers and artisans that flourished from 1150 CE before its decline and disappearance in 1500 CE. In 1894 the famous Duck River Cache discovery became one of the best cultural finds in the eastern United States, which contained dozens of ceremonial stone weapons and sandstone sculptures of human figures dubbed "Adam and Eve." Most of the stone tools from the Duck River Cache is on permanent display at the McClung Museum in Knoxville and the male "Adam" sculpture is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1979.206.476.
