Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Western Europe, England or Germany, Medieval period, ca. 10th to 14th century CE. A wonderful gathering of six forged-iron prick spurs with U-shaped shanks and narrow terminals. Known also as thorn spurs, each has a protruding spike along the center of the shank exterior meant to 'prick' a horse into moving. The spikes are either atop a narrow neck or attached directly to the center of the band. The terminals of most have rivets or a perforation for a strap to attach the spur to the back of a boot heel. The prick spurs were the first type of riding spur invented sometime around the 5th century BCE and were widely used in Europe from the Middle Ages to the 14th century when rondel spurs became popular. Size of largest: 6.5" L x 3.75" W (16.5 cm x 9.5 cm)
