Europe, modern day Italy, Ostrogoth, ca. 5th century CE. A lovely ovoid bronze belt buckle with four inlaid triangular panels of wine red glass and a thick tongue. The Ostrogoths were pagan, and so buried their dead with elaborate grave goods and in formal dress. Belt buckles like this one are found in the graves of elite Ostrogothic women, who were also dressed in earrings, necklaces, and brooches. Size: 2.8" W x 2.75" H (7.1 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private Dere Family Collection, NYC, NY acquired in the 1908s/90s.
