Description:

East Asia, Korea, Silla Kingdom, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A rare example of a high-fired grey stoneware vase known as a "kobae" for its openwork tall conical foot. The body of the vase expands rapidly into a near-spherical body, a wide neck, and a flaring mouth with a slight rim. Incised around the neck and shoulder are registers of tightly spaced waveforms separated by raised bands. Vessels like this one have been found in high status tombs, containing offerings. Indeed, some fascinating offerings have been excavated from Silla period tombs - like soybean paste, red pepper paste, kimchi, and fermented fish sauce. Size: 6.25" W x 7.8" H (15.9 cm x 19.8 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s to early 2000s; ex-Katsuragi Antiques
