Description:

East Asia, Korea, Silla Dynasty, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A fine example of a high-fired grey stoneware vase known as a kobae for its tall, openwork foot. The body of the vase expands rapidly to a near-spherical form with a wide neck, and a flared rim with three registers of incised waveform motifs. Vessels like this example have been found in high status tombs and once contained a myriad of offerings. Indeed, some fascinating offerings have been excavated from Silla period tombs such as soybean paste, red pepper paste, kimchi, and fermented fish sauce. Size: 8" W x 10.4" H (20.3 cm x 26.4 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, 1980s-2000s
