Description:

Egypt, Coptic Culture, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A large textile panel tightly woven from linen with dyed wool, mounted in a modern wood and glass frame. The beige ground is embellished with a maroon-red eight-pointed star and birds, vine scrolls, and geometric interlacing bands - influences from Islamic and Byzantine culture. This panel may have been from a tunic or funerary shroud - the deceased were clad in their finest clothing with additional textile coverlets and cushions. Textiles such as this piece, have survived the centuries due to the dry climate and burial practices of Coptic Christians.
