Description:

Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodlands period, ca. 8000 BCE to 1800 CE. A collection of 53 knapped stone projectile points, drills, and other tools made from chert, and 6 elk teeth known as ivories. Interestingly, elk are the only animal in the lower 48 states, that have what is considered ivory, the upper canine teeth of both bulls and cow elk are the remains of prehistoric tusks, and each animal has just 2 total, making them a special material and prized by many Native American tribes. These ivories were perhaps collected while searching for arrowheads or from hunting trophies. All are displayed in modern Riker cases. Size of largest tool: 3.2" L x 1.25" W (8.1 cm x 3.2 cm); case: 16.25" L x 12.25" W (41.3 cm x 31.1 cm)

Please note that the elk teeth are likely Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus canadensis nelsoni). Several states and countries prohibit the importation of materials listed as ivory. Please check your country’s laws before bidding on this piece.
