Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fabulous ensemble of Roman pottery oil lamps, each featuring an annular body, a round nozzle, a lug handle, and a concave discus pierced with 2 fill holes. Four have relief patterns adorning their shoulder, while only 2 present figural scenes in their central tondos; one displaying the confronting busts of Isis and Serapis and another with a nude male bearing a spear and facing left. The underside of the latter is stamped with a maker's mark of an abstract design. Size of largest (Isis and Serapis): 4.8" L x 3.6" W x 2" H (12.2 cm x 9.1 cm x 5.1 cm)

A similar pottery oil lamp with Serapis and Isis can be found at the Archaeological Museum of Zadar in Croatia, under inventory number AMZd A-10180.

Provenance: private Bell Buckle, Tennessee, USA collection, by descent, acquired in Tunisia before 1969

  • Condition: Stable hairline fissure on nozzle of lamp with lattice pattern shoulder. All have expected chips, nicks, and abrasions commensurate with age. Otherwise, all are intact and excellent with good remaining imagery and rich earthen deposits throughout.
