Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An interesting collection of 5 bronze and brass medical instruments, some with decorative handles. The assorted implements include a spoon with a knob finial, a lancet, and then three tools with two uses: a scoop with a pestle at the opposite end, a spatula with a scoop, and a spatula with a pestle. All were used in preparing medicinal remedies from herbs or other ingredients. Roman surgical instruments were very similar to those described by Hippocrates in the 5th century BCE and Galen in the 2nd century CE - in fact, several of their tools are like ones that were in use until the 20th century!
