Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE; Western Asia, Scythian culture, ca. 5th to 4th century BCE; Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE; Near East, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE; Near East, Islamic, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A fine gathering of 5 bronze or leaded bronze artifacts from across the ancient world. First is a Luristan bronze horse figure standing atop sinuous legs. Next is a Scythian leaded bronze applique depicting an eye, horn, and ear of a bull. Third is a petite Roman leaded bronze harpy, perhaps used as a leg for a table setting or a furniture model. Next is a Seljuk bronze avian ornament with a raised head and slender beak. Last is an Islamic bronze miniature military standard with an image of an abstract zoomorph incised on one side. Size of largest (Luristan horse): 1.65" L x 0.6" W x 1.35" H (4.2 cm x 1.5 cm x 3.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

  • Condition: Bull applique is a fragment of a larger composition; remaining 4 pieces are intact and very good. All items have light encrustations and softening to some finer details. Nice patina throughout.
