Description:

Native American, central/midwestern/southeastern United States, Mississippian (found in Aiken County, South Carolina) and Eastern Woodlands, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A nice gathering of hand-carved stone artifacts from ancient Native Americans including 3 net weights and 2 net sinkers of Mississippian origin as well as a single stone discoidal of Eastern Woodlands origin. The discoidal has concave faces, smooth side walls, and a mottled red and brown presentation. The net weights are of either rectangular or celt-shaped forms, each with a petite hole drilled through one area. The 2 soapstone net sinkers have larger drilled holes for feeding thicker rope through. The net weights and net sinkers are displayed within modern Riker boxes. Size (discoidal): 2.9" W x 1.375" H (7.4 cm x 3.5 cm); (largest net sinker): 2.2" W x 2.8" H (5.6 cm x 7.1 cm); (largest weight): 3.3" L x 1.6" W (8.4 cm x 4.1 cm); (Riker boxes): 6.2" L x 5.1" W (15.7 cm x 13 cm)

  • Condition: Both net sinkers are of fragmentary forms as shown; net weights and discoidal are intact and very good. Each item has light abrasions and nicks commensurate with age and use. Nice preservation to overall forms. Old inventory labels on versos of some pieces.
