Description:

Native American, Eastern United States, Woodland period, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A collection of 5 stone tools and artifacts: a grinding mortar, spherical pebble, a preform gorget, and other worked stones. The mortar is comprised of a rounded white stone with an indentation in the top from hours of grinding via a pestle or even with a round pebble like the one included, just rolled back and forth with the heel of a hand. The largest stone is worked into an elongated form with a shallow drilled cavity, and the discoidal stone also has worked drilled holes and perforations- perhaps an unfinished gorget. The black heavy teardrop-shaped stone is often known as a fishing plummet, but the use of this Woodland artifacts is heavily debated, with some researchers believing they were used for fishing and others believing they were weights for weaving looms. Size of largest stone: 6.5" L x 2.5" W (16.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
