Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A group of 5 hand-built and highly burnished pottery figures, each embellished with red and white pigment. The first seated figure holds a petite bowl in both hands and has impressed eyes and mouth beneath a simple headband. Three standing figures are of the sheepface variety, with tall foreheads and ovine facial features, and the tallest dons a white skirt and an intricately incised headband. Size of largest: 5.4" W x 10.8" H (13.7 cm x 27.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

  • Condition: Repairs to each figure with areas of restoration to tip of forehead of one figure. Abrasions, nicks, chips, fading to pigment, light encrustations, and minor pitting to each figure. Nice remains of pigment.
