East Asia, China, Japan, & Korea, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A collection of porcelain water droppers and ink wells for calligraphy and painting. The small rectangular one is a 1920s to 1930s Japanese type with a dye transfer blue landscape under a clear glaze. A Korean water dropper with a ring shape, raised rim and open center, and a Chinese "beehive" shaped coupe (water / ink well) with a blue landscape. Scholarly arts, such as painting and calligraphy were highly respected and as a result many unique utensils were produced in East Asia -water droppers and coupes were used to dilute the cake of ink on the inkstone to obtain the right consistency. Size of largest: 3" Diameter x 1.5" H (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Monument, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1950s
