Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu & Chancay, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A diverse collection of textile fragments woven from cotton and camelid wool - alpaca or llama. The largest is a loose weave with embroidered stepped motifs. The long sash has a fish border that is double woven which creates a revere color pattern of the same design on the verso. A pair of white cotton pieces with vibrant wool bands with a wave motif. The final fragment is a complex piece: an abstract head with a dense fringe atop extending panels that are purposefully split down the middle- perhaps an opening slit for a garment- with one side the remains of abstract birds and abstract zoomorphs. Size of largest: 17" L x 11" W (43.2 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966
