Description:

Asian Art. India, Gupta Dynasty, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A high-relief carving of a reddish sandstone head wearing a tall, conical crown. The face is serene, with wide eyes and a well-carved nose, mouth, and ears. The crown towers over the head, decorated with a cross or bow at the front and with its sides carved to give it a heavily textured, hexagonal appearance. The Gupta period is sometimes referred to as India's Golden Age, when imperial patronage allowed the arts to flourish; this period had great influence on subsequent periods, like that of the Pala Empire and Kashmir. Their refined artistic forms are characterized by fluid, almost whimsical carving, with gentle curves and a geometric attention to symmetry and shape. Size: 2.55" L x 2.15" W x 4.95" H (6.5 cm x 5.5 cm x 12.6 cm)
