Central Asia, India, Gupta Dynasty, ca. 4th to 6th century CE. A handsome redware bull with a tiered headdress. This is Nandi, the gate-guardian of Kailasa, where Lord Shiva lives. He is also Shiva's mount. He is often depicted with a human body and a bull head, as here. This example has nicely incised details and is sculpted to have a cylindrical shaft horizontally through its shoulders. An early Hindu representation with fine details! Size: 2.95" W x 4.45" H (7.5 cm x 11.3 cm); 6.35" H (16.1 cm) on included custom stand.
