Ancient Central Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A hand-built stucco head depicting a well-groomed man. The masculine visage presents with heavy-lidded eyes, a prominent nose, a mustache across his top lip, and sizable earrings adorning each ear. His wavy, backswept coiffure is bound with a medallion-fronted fillet that imbues him with a sense of royalty or high social standing. Soft remains of red and pink pigment are visible across the composition and nicely contrast against the powdery white surfaces.
