Description:

Ancient Near East, Byzantine, ca. 4th to 7th century CE. A beautiful ring composed of 67.5% to 97.8% silver depicting a family. The ring features a band with a flattened interior that supports an ovoid face. Engraved into the surface is a scene of a man facing left with his wife meeting his gaze. Between them is a smaller head, a boy, facing the mother. Above them is a crucifix, an indication these people hold Christian beliefs. This lovely ring is wearable and is an amazing glimpse into a "family portrait" style of jewelry. Size of band: 0.82" Diameter (2.1 cm); opening size: 0.7" Diameter (1.8 cm); size of ring face: 0.6" L x 0.5" W (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of silver: 67.5% to 97.8%; total weight: 4.1 grams; US ring size: 7.5

Byzantine society was heavily centered on Christian beliefs and the hope of salvation through Christ. The cross symbol quickly replaced the Chi-Rho as the standard emblem of this religious devotion, and crosses were worn by all classes. A ring made of silver was certainly owned by a wealthier member of society.
