Description:

East Asia, China, Wei Dynasty, ca. 386 to 535 CE. A charming grayware ram, seated with his legs folded underneath him, his hooves and limb musculature are defined in relief on the sides of his body. The underside reveals the hollow interior of this mold-made animal. The ram has a large body, thick neck, and petite head with curling horns and flared nostrils. Rams and other agricultural animals were placed inside tombs to accompany the deceased to the underworld. Rams were symbolic of luck; indeed, the word for "ram" in Chinese is like the one for "auspicious." An attractive example! Size: 4" L x 2.125" W x 3" H (10.2 cm x 5.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
